Winter Travels 2019--Part 16: Volunteering at the Food Bank

Wednesday we finally had our chance to volunteer for the Food Bank at Church of the Good Shepherd. We arrived at 9:00 to join about a dozen people who stuffed 351 bags with 10 items each for kids at local schools to take home over the weekend. Then we drove to the nearby storage facility where we helped Terry check dates and box cans donated to the Food Bank. It had just stopped raining and was still mostly cloudy and only in the low 50°s and we were pretty much outdoors working on a table, which wasn’t ideal but we managed to stay warmish. Terry hoped that we could do the fruit cans, and we managed to do all the fruit and all the soup! He was effusive with his thanks and we left feeling like we had made a difference. Back at the Church, we picked up Jim and took him to lunch at Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant. Again we talked for a long time before we took him home and bought a few groceries, and took Marv to an Urgent Care to find out what was causing his persistent sore throat. They did a strep test but decided it was just a viral thing that would pass on its own. We headed back to Barb and Joe’s where I made a fruit salad to go with the yummy chicken dinner Barb had made. We did a couple more loads of laundry while we ate and then their friends, Jerry and Mikke, came over to play Uno Attack. It was a really fun evening and we got to bed after midnight.
