Winter Trip 2017--Coming Home

Tuesday, March 8, we drove in rain most of the way to Carmel to see Sarah’s family. The temperatures were in the mid-50s most of the day. We took everyone out for dinner to celebrate Jordan’s 9th birthday, which was the next day.

Wednesday we went on to Fort Wayne to see Ken’s family. We were aware of a strong west wind but it didn’t seem to affect our drive much. We had lunch with them and realized the winds were growing fiercer. People were texting us about how bad conditions were in East Lansing. Eventually we heard from next door neighbor, Chalo, that the power was out. Gusts over 50 mph had brought down trees and wires across lower Michigan. We enjoyed taking Ken and the kids out for Ken’s birthday dinner (Jen had to work) and then decided to spend the night with Ken and Jen. The Board of Water and Light kept pushing back what time our power would be restored and so we stopped at Auburn on our way home Thursday and bought a generator from Home Depot. About 20 minutes on Chalo called to say the power was back on. We got home before noon and quickly unloaded the cab of the truck. By the time we finished that it occurred to us that the house really wasn’t warming up like we thought it should. It was still only 60°. Marv found water on the floor by the furnace and realized it wasn’t working. An $85 service call told us that the control panel was blown (probably by the power surge when electricity was restored) and he couldn’t fix it under warranty. It took until Friday afternoon, after a very cold night, and Marv driving to Jackson to pick up a new panel to finally get our heat restored. In the meantime, the house got down to 50°, we emptied and reclosed the camper, did all the laundry, went to choir, and watched MSU play two B1G Tournament games, winning the first but losing the second. We finally feel like we’re home after a very memorable Winter Trip.

Their huge basement has lots to do for all ages. The room at the far left has a nice pool table.
