Winter Trip 2016--to Payne's Prairie State Park

Sun. Jan. 24: We awoke to clear skies and temperatures around freezing. After breakfast at the hotel we had a very welcomed, utterly uneventful drive. Hwy. 231 is wide and had very little traffic until we got close to I75 in Florida. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperature slowly rose into the low 50s.  We stopped at a rest stop and each ate a piece of fried chicken from the night before and veggies from the cooler. When we got to Gainesville we stopped at a do-it-yourself car wash to get the crud off of the trailer. Our campsite at Payne’s Prairie State Park is at the curve of a loop so there is no one next to or across from us. It would be a very nice place to spend some time. But we did a minimal set-up and got the water system operating, knowing we will only be here for a night. While we worked we had three visitors—two other campers who are in TrailManors and a camper who is visiting a dealership tomorrow because he wants to purchase one! We have never camped anyplace with three TrailManors. We got a third meal out of last night’s fried chicken, which I added to vermicelli and served with a big marinated veggie salad. The rest of the evening was spent organizing everything to live in comfort for 6 weeks in warm weather. Our winter shoes and coats are in our suitcases in the truck and all the food is in the refrigerator. I anticipate that I won’t be posting again until we have met up with Kris and Heidi and spent some time at Highlands Hammock State Park near Sebring together.

Winter Trip 2016-to Montgomery, AL

Sat. Jan. 23: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANALYN! We packed up and got things to the truck just as Tom and Mary Ann arrived to pick us up. Tom had even swept the truck clear of snow for us! They tried to take us to a funky, world famous diner near Churchill Downs and the University of Louisville for breakfast but to everyone’s great disappointment it was closed (due to snow? We’ll never know, I guess). Instead we went to a nearby Denny’s and had a nice visit before they returned us to the motel to check out. We were on the road by 9:30. I65 was clear and mostly dry as we started out. As we rolled along we found out that:
  1. 1)    Sallie and Jim had gotten off I75 at 11:30pm and found a Knight’s Inn to stay for the night. They got on slushy I75 south around 9:00. By the end of the day, they got to a Holiday Inn in Tifton, GA. In the meantime, Shari’s family’s flight to meet them in Orlando Sunday had been cancelled because of the blizzard and up to 30” of expected snow. They hoped to be able to fly out on Monday instead.
  2. 2)   Mary Ann and John were settled in for another day in Kentucky as northbound I75 was still closed and it was still snowing. Some people had stayed on the freeway for 19 hours before they could get away.
  3. 3)   Rachel and Michael had lost power because of snow and high winds in Atlanta.
  4. 4)   Periodic photos from Hank showed towering and still growing snow banks such as we haven’t seen in many years.

Our drive took a sudden turn for the worse when we arrived at the Tennessee border. It took us several hours to c-r-a-w-l to Nashville on two hard packed, snow covered lanes that were piled with snow on each side, with scores of cars and semis off the road in the snow banks. As we inched along I got some pictures of the snow and traffic. By lunchtime it was clear we couldn’t make it to Atlanta today. We let Rachel know and then contacted the RV Park, where they told us they would have to charge us because they have a 48 hour cancelation policy. I appealed to the woman on the phone, pointing out that even the airlines were accommodating people without charge because of the weather, and she said she’d see what she could do. Time will tell….
The next 4 are all pictures taken along I65 while we were stopped or slowed.

We shared a quick Subway footlong for lunch (bought from a woman who had been there all night and was planning on staying in her car there for another night), and, fearing the road condition on I24 which runs southeast, continued on I65 south. The freeway improved greatly and we made good time as we entered Alabama with temperatures around 34° and clear skies. As we drove through Birmingham a huge full moon rose. We got the MSU/Maryland basketball game on Marv’s phone app and listened as we drove. Just before the half we lost our signal so we stopped at a great diner off the freeway for their half a fried chicken with salad bar and one side (Marv, fried green tomatoes; me, homemade onion rings). It was more than either of us could finish! We got the signal back with about 12 minutes left in the game and listened with delight as MSU pulled out the desperately needed WIN! There was a Sleep Inn on the north side of Montgomery where we got a room and stayed the night, anticipating an early start and getting back on schedule with arrival at Payne’s Prairie State Park on Sunday.

Winter Trip 2016: to Louisville

Jan. 21-22: I didn’t really intend to start right off with the blog but it has been so eventful I decided to go ahead so people know what is happening. We had watched the weather so carefully and everything looked good for Indiana and Michigan. Thursday we planned on seeing Ken’s family in Fort Wayne and stay the night with Sarah’s family to celebrate Analyn’s fifth birthday. Originally we planned to head east from there and take I75 down to Atlanta, with an overnight using our Choice points in Knoxville. But as Thursday wore on a mega storm named Jonas was building and threatening Central Kentucky across and east, up the mid-Atlantic coast.  As soon as we got to Carmel Marv managed to change our reservation from Knoxville to Louisville and our route from I75 to I65. We celebrated the birthday at Chuck E. Cheese for dinner.

Analyn opened our presents before bed. All the My Little Ponies and the butterfly/fairy wings were a big hit, but especially the remote control Pony airplane!

We celebrated Analyn again at nursery school for snack time on Friday.

We left from school and got on the road heading into the storm. But we didn’t see any snow at all until about half an hour from Louisville, where it was coming down hard. Although it was only noon they had a room ready for us and we checked in and heaved a sigh of relief to be safely settled. Not wanting to remove the trailer from the truck we walked to a McDonald’s almost next door for a 2:00 lunch. As the afternoon wore on we were in contact with Sallie and Jim, who had driven south on I75, and found themselves stopped dead in traffic at 1:00 a few miles south of Berea, KY. We also found out that Mary Anne and John Larzelere had gotten as far as Corbin, KY coming north from Florida on I75 and gotten off the freeway at 11:30 to wait it out. We walked to a Taco Bell just beyond the McDonald’s for dinner.  The snow continued until about 7:00 and then quit in Louisville, with about 5” on the ground. Around 9:00 I talked to Mary Anne who said it was still snowing in Corbin and John was skeptical whether they would be able to leave tomorrow, and doubted they’d make it home for him to take Duncan to the MSU/Maryland basketball game. At 9:40 I finally called Sallie and they had just started rolling, but very slowly. She just hoped to get off the freeway and find an open truck stop or someplace to use the bathroom and she thought they might just sleep in the car and continue on. Despite our relative inactivity it had been an exhausting day and so we went to bed early. We planned on having breakfast with Tom and Mary Ann Sherby at 8:00 and hoped that I65 would be clear enough for us to continue on Saturday to Atlanta, as originally planned.
The truck gathers snow but it wasn't too bad.
